Randy Wisdom's Story
At age 54, Randy Wisdom lost his 5 year battle with colon cancer. Unfortunately he was one of many that each year are faced with the harsh reality of this disease. He was one of the fortunate ones though in that he had a huge support system and community of friends and family that enabled him to survive five years after his diagnosis at age 49. He also had the game of golf.
Anyone that knew Randy knew that he was a proud man who was extremely competitive, worked hard, and absolutely loved the game of golf. It was his escape. No matter where he played, who he played with, or when he played, he simply loved the game of golf. For Randy, golf was an escape from his cancer. He never let cancer interfere with an opportunity to play a round of golf.
If you play golf, then you know that it is really an individual sport. It is you against the course. One day you are in control of your game and shoot lights out and the next day the course eats you alive. Cancer is very much like that. When you have cancer it is you against the disease. One day you can be in control and the next day who knows.
So out of our love for Randy, his love for the game of golf, and as a celebration of his life, we wanted to give back in a small way to the community through what has become an annual charity event. Each year the tournament benefits the University of Kansas Cancer Center, specifically the Shawndra Beauchamp Turner Colorectal Cancer Research Fund. Our objective is to raise awareness about colon cancer and early detection, the importance of sharing family history, while raising funds for research, and innovative ways to fight the disease; one day hopefully finding a cure.
Over the last four years we were pleased to have had over 300 participants , raising over $20,000 for cancer research. Every dollar raised has the potential to make a difference.
Please join us this year and help us celebrate the great game of golf, the great man who loved the game, and help us give back to our community and support this important cause.
